Last week at SecuTech Expo 2010 in Taipei, Compro Technology displayed their newest IP camera that is focused on the consumer market.

Compro’s line of professional IP surveillance cameras all support Power over Ethernet (POE), which simplifies the installation process where only one wire is required for both the data and power, and two-way audio support is standard.

Also included is a built-in MicroSD slot to support local snapshot storage, a Digital I/O connector for External Sensor and Alarm equipment, and three surveillance software options – iWizard, WebVUer and ComproView, allowing the user to view the cameras from a PC or select mobile phones.

The Compro IP line can also be paired with the Compro Video Mate (WL150) which allows for wireless operation.

Compro’s newest unit, the IP60, will run customers about $100 online.

We think that video surveillance systems used by local police and municipalities are a good thing. While cameras in pubic areas may not be as effective as an officer on the street, they do provide a certain sense of security and no doubt have deterred crime in some areas. However, the authorities may have gone too far in Baltimore, where they required one bar owner to install a video surveillance camera within the bar with a live feed to the police station.

The owner of Shirley’s Honey Hole, a small neighborhood bar in Baltimore, was in deep trouble after her bar had been deemed a nuisance property after repeated calls to police about drug deals and loud patrons. Sounds like a typical shady neighborhood bar, right?

Well in order to keep her doors open, Shirley accepted a plea deal to hire a security guard and install a camera with a live feed to Baltimore’s City Watch control center, where the city’s other 450 public cameras are monitored.

While the move is considered legal since the bar owner agreed to it, it’s questionable whether she really had a choice, since the other option would be closing down the bar and losing her livelihood.

Unfortunately for Shirley, the large signs warning patrons that the city is watching them order a round for their friends may have the same effect.

In Linksys Gets Physical With Launch of New IP Video Security Camera, CRN writer Jennifer Hagendorf Follet reports that the Linksys division of Cisco, best known for its inexpensive routers and other network gear, is introducing an IP-based video camera. Targeted to sell at a street price of $299, the camera offers pan, tilt, and zoom functions, and is targeted at the small to medium business (SMB) market.

With its pan, tilt and zoom capabilities, users can control the camera’s movement and focus remotely via the Internet. Up to 10 users can simultaneously access the camera remotely. An integrated microphone also picks up and records audio.

In addition, the camera can be set in a security mode that can automatically record video and audio feeds when it senses motion and can send a short video clip via an e-mail alert. The camera also includes an Infrared cut filter that enables viewing in low-light or no-light environments when an external IR light is used.

The camera offers 640×480 resolution, and supports MPEG-4 video compression. Linksys intends to introduce a full range of SMB security components, including remote recording and motion detection software, other suveillance cameras, and special training for its partners.

While the major intended use for the camera may be physical security, employers also use video surveillance systems to track productivity, prevent safety violations, and document workplace accidents. Inexpensive but powerful cameras that can run over a firm’s network will make these activities easier and cheaper to accomplish.
