An article in BusinessWeekOnline, Airport Video Surveillance Goes Hi-Tech, details plans to install smart CCTV capabilities at the Helsinki (Finland) airport:

SmartCatch technology from digital surveillance specialist Vidient automatically monitors CCTV footage and can recognise potential security threats. It also flags up operational issues such as building queues and bottlenecks of human traffic through customs and security… The system can alert staff to events which may need further investigation without the need for every camera to be observed by staff. For example, suspect packages or vehicles left unattended will be flagged up and staff alerted.

The product, Smart Catch, is made by Vidient. a firm based in Sunnyvale, CA.  The firm doesn’t provide many details of how their system works, but claims to be 95 - 98% effective in its recognition of problem situations.  According to Vidient, their product will:

  • Monitor CCTV cameras for suspicious behaviors in real-time
  • Alert appropriate security personnel when suspicious activity is detected
  • Integrate with other security sensor systems to provide full situational awareness
  • Manage incident response by notifying the right personnel, implementing an escalation plan, and capturing response details for reporting
  • Create a searchable video repository
  • The fact that it can supposedly work with existing surveillance camera systems may be appealing to some potential buyers.
